Kevin Williamson, vice- convener of the Scottish Independence Convention, stood on a platform with Alex Salmond at the Yes Scotland launch recently.

The Scotsman has seen a blog that he wrote, which pictures him speaking at a Glencoe rally in 2006. It also shows pictures of a Union flag being burnt with the caption: “What better way to warm the hands of everyone present than a fine bonfire of the Butcher’s Apron.”

Last night a Scottish Conservative spokesman said: “Fortunately, the majority of right-thinking Scots would be appalled by such extreme views and behaviour.

When asked about his blog, Mr Williamson said: “I can’t really remember.”
