Jennie Formby, one of Unite’s representatives on the National Executive Committee (NEC) said it was “nonsense” to blame Mr Corbyn for the referendum result. The leader of the Communication Workers Union Dave Ward spoke out in support of Mr Corbyn, as did the Rail, Maritime and Transport union.

Meanwhile, Unite general secretary Len McCluskey warned that Labour MPs opposed to Mr Corbyn could face mandatory reselection by their constituency parties.
