Tories act over racist poem

A TORY parliamentary candidate who circulated a racist poem that mocked immigrants as welfare cheats and declared Britain was "full" was suspended by Conservative Central Office last night.

Ellenor Bland, a councillor in Wiltshire, had been approved as a prospective parliamentary candidate at the next general election.

But after it emerged that she had circulated the poem to fellow councillors, she was referred to the Commission for Racial Equality by the Liberal Democrats.

The Tory leadership responded by suspending Ms Bland and declaring that the party "disassociates itself entirely from the sentiments in this poem".
