Teachers deliver ‘last chance’ ultimatum

Teachers have warned ministers that a crunch meeting next month to discuss pension
demands will be the “last-chance saloon” before a strike, unless an agreement can be reached.

The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS), the country’s largest teaching union, has
accused the Scottish Government of stalling discussions on changes which, it believes, will lead to increased contributions.

Teachers also fear the changes could see them work beyond 65.

Ministers and unions have failed to reach an agreement after eight months of talks, and teachers were said to be furious that a meeting earlier this week was cancelled at short notice.

General secretary Larry Flanagan said: “This is absolutely the last-chance saloon for the Scottish Government.”
