Sturgeon opens birthing centre

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon was today due to carry out the official opening of the new birth centre at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

The £2.8 million centre, which opened to patients in October, has six delivery rooms, each with their own birthing pool and en suite bathroom.

It is attached to the Simpson Centre for Reproductive Health and offers facilities for mothers-to-be who are expecting straightforward labours.

Ms Sturgeon was due to visit the centre this morning.
