SNP’s Drew Hendry to stand against Danny Alexander

HIGHLAND Council leader Drew Hendry has announced plans to stand for election as an SNP candidate in the Inverness seat currently held by Treasury Secretary Danny Alexander.

Mr Hendry put his name forward for selection as a candidate after being nominated for selection by SNP members.

Mr Alexander has been MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey since 2005.

Former SNP leader and First Minister Alex Salmond last week rubbished reports that he was considering standing in the seat.

Mr Hendry told the BBC: “I understand that my proven track record for getting things done, for securing cross party support, and helping to bring economic benefits to the Highlands has helped to attract my nomination.”

Brought up in Edinburgh before moving to the Black Isle in 1999, Mr Hendry was first elected in the 2007 Scottish Local Elections for the Aird and Loch Ness ward, taking the third seat out of four.

He took the second seat in the 2012 Local Elections, with the SNP group forming a coalition with the Liberal Democrats and Scottish Labour to run the council.
