SNP to vote against Brexit deal: 'Totally predictable', our readers react to SNP decision

Our readers have been reacting to the SNP’s decision to vote against Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal with the EU – and the opinion is mixed.

Nicola Sturgeon and the SPN have already stated they will reject Boris Johnson's Brexit deal with the EU.

The SNP will vote against the UK Government’s Brexit deal with the European union, its Westminster leader Ian Blackford confirmed on Sunday, saying the deal was an ““unforgivable act of economic vandalism and gross stupidity”.

Despite the SNP’s stance, however, Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal is almost certain to be passed by MPs later this week, especially after Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said they would back the deal as the only option to avoid a ‘No Deal' Brexit.

We asked our readers what their thoughts were on the SNP’s decision to reject the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal with the EU – and it’s fair to say there were strong opinions on both sides of the fence.

‘She’s making us look like fools with her chopping and changing’ said Margaret Duncan Bollan, adding: ‘She self contradicts so often, changes her direction and makes excuses’, and Baz Nicol was even stronger in his criticism of the SNP’s decision, saying: ‘Hypocritical and fully conversant with my belief that they would decimate quality of living in this country simply to achieve independence.’

Marie Muir says she has more than faith in the Prime Minister than the Scottish government, commenting: “I am a Scot living in Scotland. I do not like the SNP and Nicola Sturgeon. I have faith in Boris Johnson. Now that we have left the EU we will come to agreements because it is in everybody's interest to do so’, Martyn Smith echoed the comments, saying: “Westminster could turn round tomorrow and say in Scotland everybody will be getting £1000 to spend on anything you like and the SNP would still vote against it’ adding in: ‘the sooner we get rid of the SNP the better.’

Dell V Cessford would also like to see the back of the SNP, saying: “Frankly speaking, we need rid of the SNP in its entirety. We need to rebuild Scotland to its former glory of a wonderful education system, a cohesive country where people work together for the good of the country. All this bickering and SNP MPs making us look like stupid idiots to the rest of the world is demeaning.’

Sheila Duff, however, was on the side of the First Minister, commenting: “I totally agree with them. It’s bad for Scotland - why would we vote for it?’, and Roy Currie agreed, saying: ‘It’s the right thing to do... the SNP are the only party to show consistency and principle throughout this whole sorry Brexit mess.’

Mike Ward also agrees with the decision, stating: ‘It's not just bad for Scotland, but bad for the whole of the UK. Boris has caved in and the EU have got what they want’ calling the deal ‘absolutely outrageous and almost unbelieveable.’ Michael Porter also thinks time will prove the SNP right, adding: “It's not just the SNP saying it is a bad deal. Time itself will prove it.”

Mattias Bengtsson,however, felt the SNP weren’t alone, in that the same issue was felt in other parties, saying: ‘Starmer and Labour has the same problem. Voting for gives it legitimacy. SNPs choice to vote against is a pointless manifest of showing - through the process - that this is not what Scotland’s majority voted for.’
