Sir Mervyn King to get Abertay University degree

SIR Mervyn King, who has just stepped down as Governor of the Bank of England, is to receive an honorary degree from Abertay University at its summer graduation later this week, it was announced today.

Sir Mervyn will be joined in receiving an honorary degree at Thursday’s ceremony by Scottish rugby legend and BBC commentator Andy Nicol, and Professor Iain Gordon, chief executive of the James Hutton Institute.

Sir Mervyn retired from the post of Governor of the Bank of England at the end of June. He had held the post for ten years. and it t was announced in the 2013 Birthday Honours that he is to receive a life peerage in recognition of his contributions to public service.

Andy Nicol was the first British player to lift the Heineken Cup as captain of Bath, and also captained the Scotland team in 2000 when Scotland defeated England 19-13 at Murrayfield to deny England the Grand Slam. He won 23 caps for Scotland, including seven as captain.

Professor Nigel Seaton, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Abertay University, said: “I am delighted that Abertay University is conferring honorary degrees on such inspirational leaders. All of our Honorary Graduates have excelled in very different walks of life – from leading the UK’s central bank through turbulent economic times, to reaching the heights of international sport and researching crucial global problems of biodiversity and sustainability.”

Sir Mervyn will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Letters in the morning ceremony. In the afternoon Andy Nicol will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Arts, and Professor Gordon will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Science.
