Scottish independence: Pro-Union campaign gains 45,000 supporters

A CONSERVATIVE-led campaign backing the Union has gained 45,000 supporters since being set up earlier this year.

The “Conservative Friends of the Union Initiative” has also received £150,000 in donations, the party said yesterday.

All those who have registered their support are Scottish residents, the campaign said, with backers coming from both within and outside the Tory fold.

It comes after the Conservatives issued 200,000 leaflets at a launch in the spring. The campaign will now feed into the main “Better Together” campaign which is backed by all three pro-Union parties.

Scots Tory leader Ruth Davidson said: “For 45,000 people to take the time to fill out a form to join Conservative Friends of the Union is staggering.”

She claimed it showed that there was a grassroots movement in place to back the UK ahead of the coming referendum.
