Scottish independence: Miliband vows state shake-up

ED Miliband will today promise a shake-up of the British state if Scots reject independence on Thursday as the Labour leader makes his latest intervention in the referendum campaign.

Mr Miliband is expected to pledge that the next Labour government will match the UK’s previous “great achievements” such as the creation of a free National Health Service and the introduction of improved rights at work such as the minimum wage.

He will use a campaign visit to Scotland to state that a No vote would lead to wide ranging constitutional change, such as House of Lords reform alongside improved employment rights and a new settlement on social justice.

He said: “We will change the British state too, the House of Lords and the way we work together across our nations.

“I ask the people of Scotland to lead that change of our whole British constitution.

“The great achievements of Britain over three hundred years from workers rights to the NHS will be matched as we tackle the great injustices of today. With a no vote, things will not go back to the way things were.”
