Meanwhile, another high-profile SNP financial backer, bus company tycoon Sir Brian Souter, has yet to give any cash to Yes Scotland.

The Weirs agreed to pay a seven-figure sum to the pro-independence campaign, although nationalist bosses would not say whether the cash would go to Yes Scotland or to the SNP.

However, The Scotsman learned last night that the donation is going straight into Yes Scotland coffers.

Yes Scotland chief executive Blair Jenkins confirmed at the campaign’s latest board meeting that the Weirs had agreed to make a direct donation to the group.

Mr Jenkins was asked at the meeting whether Stagecoach owner Sir Brian had contributed to the group after he confirmed the backing from the Weirs.

The Yes Scotland boss said the group had not received any cash from Sir Brian, who helped bankroll the SNP’s 2011 election campaign with £500,000.
