Scottish independence: Discussions on timescale are now a priority

The Scottish Secretary has indicated that he intends to lock horns soon with the Scottish Government on the independence referendum.

Michael Moore called for further meetings with First Minister Alex Salmond as Scottish Government’s referendum consultation ends.

More than 19,000 responses have been received so far, on top of the 2,857 sent to the UK government’s own consultation.

Mr Moore said: “The Scottish Government will want some time to consider the responses, and that is of course right. But with both consultations now closed, and so many of the arguments well-aired and understood, I believe it is right we resume our discussions in the next few weeks.

“Responses to our own consultation gave strong backing to Scotland’s two governments working together to deliver a legal, fair and decisive referendum. I am confident we can get that done.”

The two governments disagree on the timing of the ballot. The SNP wants it to be held in autumn 2014 while Westminster wants it earlier

Scottish Government strategy minister Bruce Crawford said: “The key principle is that the timing of the referendum has to be decided by the Scottish Parliament.”
