Rangers administration: Rangers ‘must pay the tax they owe’

TREASURY Secretary Danny Alexander will today warn stricken SPL giants Rangers not to expect an easy ride from taxman.

The Liberal Democrat MP will insist there won’t be any let-up in the coalition government’s crackdown on tax avoidance.

People who dodge taxes are on the same moral plane as benefits cheats,” he will tell his party’s conference in Inverness.

“Whether you are a wealthy person or a small business, a football club, or a bank, our message is a simple one: you must pay the tax you owe and we will make sure you do.”

The Liberal Democrats are meeting for three days in the Highland capital in an effort to revive their ailing fortunes north of the Border.

The party lost 11 seats in last year’s Holyrood election and now has only five MSPs.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg will outline his economic vision for Scotland when he addresses party delegates later today.

“We have a real vision for Scotland’s future,” he will say. “I want nothing short of a green economic renaissance for Scotland; a Scotland where green jobs fuel a thriving economic future; dockyards reopened as wind farm factories; wind and wave power providing the green energy of the future; Scottish universities developing new green technologies for Scottish companies to export around the world.”

He will highlight coalition tax cuts, with plans to raise the amount workers can earn tax-free to £10,000.

Scottish Lib Dem leader Willie Rennie will wrap up the conference on Sunday with a speech to delegates.
