The Proclaimers today hailed Nicola Sturgeon as “the most impressive politician in the UK” as they formally endorsed the SNP ahead of the election.

The band - twins Craig and Charlie Reid - are long term supporters of the SNP and were high profile campaigners for a Yes vote in last year’s referendum.

“Nicola Sturgeon is the most impressive politician in the UK, her sincerity and humanity are like a breath of fresh air,” the band said in a statement today.

Their pro-independence anthem Cap in Hand soared to the top of the download charts last September in the week after the election.

It came after a campaign was launched by Yes supporting activists to make it the Number One UK single.

The 1988 song from the classic Sunshine on Leith album is a long-time favourite among the Nationalist movement and contains the iconic chorus line: “I can’t understand why we let someone else rule our land – cap in hand.”
