Nicola Sturgeon offers sympathy to David Cameron in private call

The First Minister offered her sympathies to the David Cameron after Britain voted to leave the EU.

The phone call was made earlier today by Nicola Sturgeon after the Prime Minister slumped to defeat in his bid to keep the UK in the European Union.

A source close to David Cameron reportedly described the tone of the call as “sympathetic”.

“After all she knows that it is like to lose a referendum,” he added.

The Prime Minister reassured Nicola Sturgeon that devolved administrations would be involved in the exit negotiations.

In his resignation speech Mr Cameron: “This will need to involve the full engagement of the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland governments to ensure that the interests of all parts of our United Kingdom are protected and advanced.”

Commenting on the result of the EU referendum in Scotland, First Minister and SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon said:

“Scotland has delivered a strong, unequivocal vote to remain in the EU, and I welcome that endorsement of our European status.

“And while the overall result remains to be declared, the vote here makes clear that the people of Scotland see their future as part of the European Union.

“Scotland has contributed significantly to the Remain vote across the UK. That reflects the positive campaign the SNP fought, which highlighted the gains and benefits of our EU membership, and people across Scotland have responded to that positive message.
