New Conservative parliamentary team announced

The newly appointed leader of the Scottish Conservative party, Ruth Davidson, has formally unveiled her newparliamentary team.

Ruth Davidson gave the deputy leader job to Jackson Carlaw, who finished third of four in the contest.

Murdo Fraser, whose plan to scrap the Conservative brand and start afresh split the party, has been appointed convener of Holyrood’s Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee.

Margaret Mitchell, who finished last in the leadership contest, has been appointed frontbench spokeswoman for local government and planning.

Ms Davidson said: “I am delighted to unveil my parliamentary team.

“I believe it’s a strong team which plays to the talents of the members, and will prove well able to hold the government to account.”

Mr Carlaw said: “I will be proud to serve as deputy leader of the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party and will support Ruth’s leadership both in Holyrood and with the important job of helping to reshape the party.

“This is a period of great change for our party and we will ensure that all of our members at every level are able to come together and contribute to the way we move forward.”

Each Tory MSP was given a role, apart from John Scott who serves as a deputy presiding officer at the Scottish Parliament.

Ms Davidson’s campaign manager John Lamont was made chief whip, Liz Smith stays with the education brief, Gavin Brown keeps finance, former presiding officer Alex Fergusson takes rural affairs and David McLetchie has justice.

Mary Scanlon becomes spokeswoman for energy, enterprise and tourism, while Nanette Milne takes the public health, sport and Commonwealth Games brief.

Jamie McGrigor was appointed environment and climate change spokesman, while Alex Johnstone takes infrastructure, capital investment, housing and transport.

Former leader Annabel Goldie, who did not formally back any of the leadership contenders, was appointed spokeswoman for culture and communities.
