Nationalists call for inquiry over Glasgow City Council job

NATIONALISTS have demanded an independent inquiry into the appointment of a former Labour minister to a top post at Labour-run Glasgow City Council.

Graeme Hendry, leader of the SNP opposition at the authority, said there may be a case for Audit Scotland to look into the selection of former finance minister Tom McCabe (below).

Last month, Mr McCabe was made a policy advisor to the land and environmental services department ahead of 53 other applications.

But the authority insisted the post was fully advertised and a candidate appointed after “competitive interview”. There were 40 external applicants and 14 internal ones for the post.

It was reported at the weekend that Mr McCabe
had two outside jobs at the
time of his appointment, including one at an equity business based in Luxembourg that requires two days of work per month. This interest was declared while he was an MSP.

Mr Hendry
said: “There are serious questions to be answered by Glasgow Labour.”
