MSP urges Scottish inquiry into ashes case

LOTHIANS Labour MSP Kezia Dugdale has called for a Scotland-wide public inquiry after fresh claims that babies’ ashes were being disposed of without parental consent in other parts of the country.

She said: “The revelation of issues in dealing with the ashes of stillborn and neonatal babies was exposed in Edinburgh, but similar cases in Aberdeen and Glasgow have come to light.

“As a result, I have called on the Scottish Government to launch an independent, Scotland-wide public inquiry.”

She said a change in the law was needed to ensure a consistent approach across Scotland.

Ms Dugdale said: “Public Health Minister Michael Matheson has said the Government will consider updating crematorium laws, some of which are over 100 years old. This should be moved along as we need to learn lessons and put in place legislation to make sure it never happens again.”
