MSP launches bill to crack down on Blue Badge abuse

• Parking wardens would have power to confiscate Blue Badges from those suspect to be ineligible for the scheme

• Bill would also allow disabled motorists to park closer to destinations

Parking wardens would be handed the power to seize Blue Badges from motorists who are suspected of not being eligible to be part of the scheme, under the change in the law proposed by SNP MSP Dennis Robertson.

Under the existing law only police officers have the power the confiscate the badges. Mr Robertson’s bill would also see those abusing the blue badge system facing fines of up to £1,000.

The bill is expected to attract cross party and Scottish government backing.

Mr Robertson said: “I am proud to be able to launch a consultation on a bill which will provide better enforcement of Blue Badge misuse, helping to ensure that those who need a Blue Badge can get the benefit from its use.

“Finding suitable parking spaces, particularly in towns and cities, is difficult at any time. However, if you have a disability it can be even more difficult to find a parking space close to your destination,

whether it is for work, education or leisure.”
