MP blasts 'shameful' treatment of disabled

EDINBURGH West Liberal Democrat MP John Barrett has accused the UK Government of illegally sidestepping its obligations to disabled people who have retired abroad.

He said the government had frozen disability benefits to around 3,000 UK citizens who have paid taxes and National Insurance in this country and later moved to another EU country.

He said the government was ignoring a ruling by the European Court of Justice that the people affected are entitled to the benefits under European law. Mr Barrett said: "Ministers have used every trick in the book to wriggle out of their obligations.

"For the government to pull the rug from under these people when they most need help is shameful behaviour."
