Law conference to hear independence arguments

SENIOR figures from both sides of the Scottish independence debate are to outline their competing constitutional visions at a conference for some of Scotland’s 10,000 legal professionals.

At the Law Society of Scotland event in Edinburgh, Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will explain why she thinks solicitors should say “Yes” to independence.

Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael will respond with his case for keeping the country part of the UK.

The conference on Scotland’s future will also feature contributions from polling expert John Curtice, constitutional lawyer Sir David Edward and Scottish Council for Development and Industry chief executive Ross Martin.

The conference aims to focus on the “big issues” at stake in the independence vote and ensure the voices of Scotland’s 10,000 solicitors are heard.

It will explore key topics such as currency and economics, Scotland’s membership of international organisations, and political and parliamentary reform. It will also consider what change could mean for the legal profession itself.

Bruce Beveridge, president of the Law Society of Scotland, said: “We hope that members will be able to join us for our lively one-day conference as the Law Society focuses on the big issues at stake in the independence vote.

“It is an event not to be missed and one which is sure to generate new questions as well as challenge the issues raised so far.”
