Jeremy Corbyn to campaign in Scotland during Holyrood run-in

UK Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and shadow chancellor John McDonnell will both campaign for the party in Scotland in the coming weeks during the Holyrood election campaign.

Scottish leader Kezia Dugdale held talks with Mr Corbyn and the rest of the UK shadow cabinet yesterday about the Scottish Parliament vote on 4 May, amid concerns over polling which suggests that Labour is in danger of falling behind the Conservatives into third place in Holyrood.

“We had a positive discussion today about Labour’s campaign for the Holyrood election in May,” Ms Dugdale said afterwards.

“Shadow cabinet members were left in no doubt at all that I will run an upbeat campaign with confidence in Labour’s vision for Scotland.”

A Scottish Labour spokesman said: “In the next few weeks we’ve got visits from Jeremy Corbyn, Tom Watson and John McDonnell.

“So we’ve got the leader, the deputy leader and the shadow chancellor in the next few weeks, and you can’t get more senior than that.”

Ms Dugdale has also said that the new income tax powers coming to Holyrood will “fundamentally change” politics in Scotland.

“We are entering an age of real financial accountability in Scottish politics,” she added.
