The Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body (SPCB) - Parliament’s housekeeping body - has pledged it will consider the matter.

SNP MSP Christine Grahame called on it to install “some kind of discrete plaque or memorial” for MSPs in the wake of the death of independent MSP Margo MacDonald.

Ms Grahame said that in the 15 years she has been in Holyrood, seven MSPs have died.

“I would suggest perhaps the corporate body considers some kind of discrete plaque or memorial for listing the MSPs who have died in service,” she said.

Ms Grahame said this could start with former first minister Donald Dewar, who was the first MSP to die, and list the others who have since passed, including most recently Ms MacDonald.

“Perhaps the corporate body would give some thought to this,” the SNP MSP suggested.

Tory Liz Smith, a member of the SPCB, said: “It is something on which the SPCB should reflect and we can undertake to do that.

“Everybody in this Parliament appreciates the very considerable contribution made by Margo MacDonald to the Parliament just as we also value the very considerable contributions that were made by the other members who have passed away during this Parliament, Brian Adam, David McLetchie and Helen Eadie.”
