Factfile: Jim McColl

THE butcher’s son who rose from the factory floor as an engineering apprentice at Weir Pumps to own the firm, turning around its fortunes and selling it earlier this year for £750 million to become one of Scotland’s richest men.

Jim McColl is a long-standing supporter of Alex Salmond, although he has never explicitly supported independence. He sits on the First Minister’s council of economic advisers. He currently lives in Monaco, but keeps a home in Glasgow.
