Conservatives surge ahead of Labour in new poll

The Conservatives continue to enjoy a commanding poll lead over Labour, according to a new survey.

The poll from Opinium Research indicates that if a general election were to be held tomorrow, the Conservatives would win decisively with 41 per cent of the vote compared to 29 per cent for Labour, seven per cent for the Liberal Democrats and 12 per cent for UKIP.

On leadership scores the Tories also remain well ahead, with 45 per cent saying Theresa May would be the best prime minister and 17 per cent choosing Jeremy Corbyn.

On the economy, Theresa May and chancellor Philip Hammond have an even larger lead than their predecessors.

The poll findings show 44 per cent of voters trust the Tory team to manage the economy, with 18 per cent saying the same for Jeremy Corbyn and shadow chancellor John McDonnell.

Adam Drummond, of Opinium Research, said: “Although events and circumstances have changed, the political picture remains remarkably constant with the Conservatives continuing to hold an enviable position relative to other parties and Theresa May standing head and shoulders above other leaders in the public’s view.

“Her determination to deliver the result of the EU referendum in particular appears to be keeping her support firm among Leave voters.”

Opinium staff said that the poll was based on an online survey of 2,005 UK adults aged 18 and over. It was carried out between 15 November and 18 November, with results weighted to representative criteria.
