Alex Salmond memorabilia set for charity auction

ALEX Salmond’s memorabilia of his time as Scotland’s First Minister – including his tie decorated with Saltires – is to be auctioned this week for charity.

Gifts, including signed prints by Peter Howson and Alasdair Gray, are to be sold alongside an original oil painting by Jolomo. Some of the quirkier items in the collection include a toy panda gifted by the Chinese government and a Swiss cowbell donated by Swiss government.

The array of items the former First Minister is putting up for sale is to be made available today, ahead of Saturday’s auction. The sale is to be held at Great Western Auctions, Glasgow, under the hammer of Anita Manning, the antiques expert from TV’s Bargain Hunt, Flog It and Antiques Road Trip.

Mr Salmond said: “I am delighted that three great causes will benefit from the auction of gifts and memorabilia received during my time as First Minister. The last seven-and-a-half years have been an exciting time in the history of our country and many of these items mark key milestones over that period.”

He added: “All of these gifts, received from everyone from heads of state and industry leaders to artists and school pupils, have been cherished and displayed variously at Bute House, St Andrews House or in the Scottish Parliament. Instead of packing these items away, Moira and I were keen that other people be able to treasure them and raise money for charity in the process.”

The sale will be in aid of St Jerome’s orphanage, Clic Sargent, and the Scottish Youth Theatre.

Ms Manning said: “It is going to be fabulous. I have no idea how much will be raised. There are some items that will be of some historical interest and will be expensive. But there are others that will be very affordable, but their importance will be that they were associated with Alex Salmond.”

The auction will consist of 160 lots. The charities chosen by Mr Salmond are CLIC Sargent, the Scottish Youth Theatre and St Jerome’s Orphanage in Kenya.

Other items include souvenirs commemorating Olympic and other major sporting events, Chinese objects, presentations and awards from industry and commerce, books, signed copies of the Scottish Referendum Bill and the Edinburgh Agreement.
