100 Weeks of Scotland: Ladies Day, Musselburgh Races

HAVING reached the one-third milestone of my ‘One Hundred Weeks’ project I thought I would reward myself with a jaunt to the races.

I had been meaning to capture some horseracing images for some time and when I realised it was Ladies Day at Musselburgh Races, and the sun was shining, I knew the time was right.

I had only ever been once to the races before, and that was as a photography student more intent on capturing the horses for my Sports Photography module, so I was not really sure what to expect. To say that I loved it would be an understatement. It was like being at the biggest wedding of your life, with horses thundering past every half an hour.

As for the fashion? Well it would be safe to say there was a broad spectrum of looks. Everyone had made such an effort, and were having such a lovely time that who really cares if some of the looks were a little outlandish? Which is why I think everyone in the photos I have posted look magnificent and besides, I was without doubt the worst-dressed there so who was I to judge.

It was a fantastic day out and something I would highly recommend to anyone. There was so much to see and do that the time flew past. I was so caught up in people-watching that by the end of the day I realised I had barely even seen a horse, or even placed a cheeky wager on the 3.30. Which means I have to go back and do the day properly - and it will definitely be Ladies Day again.

And I will be wearing Taffeta.

Alan McCredie began the ‘one hundred weeks of scotland’ website in October last year, and it will conclude in Autumn 2014. McCredie’s goal is to chronicle two years of Scottish life in the run-up to the independence referendum.

McCredie says ‘one hundred weeks...’ is intended to show all sides of the country over the next two years. On the site, he says: “Whatever the result of the vote Scotland will be a different country afterward. These images will show a snapshot of the country in the run up to the referendum.

“The photos will be of all aspects of Scottish culture - politics, art, social issues, sport and anything else that catches the eye.”
