Police treat tenement fire as suspicious

A FIRE in the early hours of the morning that left nine people in hospital is being treated as suspicious.

Fifteen people were rescued from the blaze in a tenement block in Edinburgh at 2:30am yesterday.

Lothian and Borders Police said the fire was started on the ground floor of a block of flats in Tarvit Street in the city’s Tollcross area.

Firefighters were called to the scene to find a ground-floor flat “well alight”.

Eight people were taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment for smoke inhalation, while a 35-year-old man was hospitalised after he jumped from the building and hurt his back.
