Police step up hunt for Glasgow car park killers

DETECTIVES stepped up their hunt today for the killers of a man shot dead in a busy supermarket car park.

The victim was gunned down in an apparent gangland killing outside the Asda store in Robroyston, Glasgow, yesterday afternoon.

He was named locally as Kevin Carroll, said to have been linked to the city's criminal underworld and who survived an attempt on his life three years ago.

The store was closed to the public yesterday as police investigated but reopened today.

Forensics experts have examined the area.

Police believe that three men wearing masks carried out the shooting, which happened at around 1.25pm yesterday.

Witnesses saw the men escape in a black or dark-coloured car.

Strathclyde Police have set up an incident room near the store's petrol station.

Yesterday forensic officers examined a black Audi in the car park, which is believed to have belonged to the victim.

Mr Carroll, thought to be 29 and nicknamed Gerbil, is believed to have been connected to a notorious Glasgow crime gang.

He survived a double shooting in the Auchinairn area of Bishopriggs, East Dunbartonshire, in November 2006, when shots were fired at him and a friend from a car. Mr Carroll was taken to hospital with stomach wounds and the other man suffered leg injuries.

Strathclyde Police said the victim was the intended target of the shooting and no-one else was injured.

Detective Superintendent Michael Orr said yesterday: "Although we believe that this was not a random attack and that he was the intended target, it does not lessen the severity of this crime.

"He was someone's son, loved one and friend and this murder will be thoroughly investigated with a team of highly trained officers."

Police have been trying to reassure local residents and said extra officers would be patrolling the area.

The victim has still to be formally identified.

Mr Orr appealed for anyone with information about the shooting to contact Strathclyde Police.

An Asda spokeswoman said: "Asda Robroyston has now reopened and we'd like to thank all our customers and colleagues for bearing with us.

"We'll continue to work closely with the police and do all we can to help them as they continue their investigation."
