Police spending is arrested

POLICE slashed spending on transport as the force faced cutbacks, new figures show.

Lothian and Borders Police spent £227,697 on travel costs between April last year and March, and £271,946 during the previous year. Those figures compare with £416,402 shelled out during 2009/10 and £354,992 the year before.

Vehicle hire costs were cut to £173,902 last year, half of the figure from three years ago.

Taxi fares were also reduced to £7242 over the year. But rail travel rose to £36,220 from £46,553 a year earlier.
