Police smash speeding car

POLICE deliberately crashed into an out-of-control car to make it stop, a court has heard.

Disqualified driver Daryl Loftus, 18, drove over the speed limit and the wrong way down various roads in Edinburgh. Drivers had to swerve out of his way as he repeatedly drove on the wrong side of the road.

Fiscal depute Pauline Shade told the city's Sheriff Court that he drove off without paying for petrol at a BP garage on Queensferry Road.

She said: "The police describe the car as being driven well in excess of the speed limit. Police officers decided to effect a controlled stop, deliberately colliding with the vehicle."

Loftus, of Polmont Young Offenders Institution, admitted stealing a car, 30 of petrol, and driving dangerously while disqualified and without insurance. Sentence was deferred.
