Police confirmed they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Safety chiefs today said parents with hot tubs should take precautions.

Peter Cornall, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accident’s head of leisure safety, said: “When outdoor features such as hot tubs and temporary paddling pools are not in use, it is a good idea to keep them free of water.

“If a hot tub is in use, then keep a cover over the top which is child-proof. Large pools in particular should have child-proof fences around them with lockable gates.”
