Police say body found in ERI car park was murder

Police today confirmed the death of a man whose body was found in the car park of Edinburgh Royal Infirmary last Sunday is being treated as a murder.

Uniform and plain clothes officers will be returning to the hospital tonight, exactly a week on from the last known sighting of the 43-year-old to raise the profile on the inquiry.

The man, who is Polish, was last captured on CCTV getting off a number 33 bus with a group of four other men near the A&E department of the hospital at about 10pm the previous Friday.

Police will revisit the area between 9 and 11pm tonight in an effort to trace more witnesses who might have seen the group of men getting off the bus.

The man was found dead with significant injuries in the car park at the hospital, and inquiries are ongoing to establish exactly what happened to him. Police are still trying to trace next of kin.

Detective Chief Inspector David McLaren from the Specialist Crime Division Major Investigation Team said: “We hope by returning to the hospital tonight we might catch people working shifts as they head to and from work who might be able to provide information about the group of men after they got off the bus.

“We have had a lot of support from the public so far, and we are grateful to everyone who has come forward with information already, but we would ask anyone who might not have spoken to police yet to get in touch on 101 as a matter of urgency.”

Anyone with any information should contact Police Scotland on 101, or the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
