The grim discovery was made yesterday afternoon by a member of the public at the popular Aberlady beach.

Officers were called to the shore after the body of a woman, believed to be in her 30s, was found in the water near to Craigielaw Point.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We were involved in an incident after we received a report about a woman’s body in the water.

“Inquiries in to the cause of her death are at an early stage, however there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.”

Police are now trying to identify the body and are checking for missing persons.

It is not known if she is local or may have been carried to the shore from another part of the Forth coastline.

But police have ruled out that the body could be that of missing city student Yulia Solodyankina. The 22-year-old Russian, a physics graduate from Edinburgh University, disappeared last month.

Despite reports of various sightings, as far afield as Glasgow and the Scottish Highlands and Islands, police have so far been unable to trace her whereabouts.
