Police launch new wildlife crime drives

Two initiatives aimed at combating wildlife crime have been launched by police in the north of Scotland.

A dedicated unit at Grampian Police has developed an information card to help members of the public recognise and report wildlife crime.

Around 30,000 cards will be distributed to the public, while posters will be displayed throughout the Grampian area in the coming months.

The initiative has received a grant from the Partnership for Action Against Wildlife Crime Scotland (PAWS).

The force, working with Northern Constabulary, has also launched a drive to make boat users more aware of whales, dolphins and porpoises in the waters around Scotland.

Information boards containing advice for crews on how to avoid breaking the law and disturbing the creatures will be placed in harbours and at launching sites by the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society. Funding for the scheme has been provided by Mearsk Oil and Optima.

Grampian Police said the campaigns coincide with the appointment of Constable Gavin Lindsay as a new full-time wildlife crime officer.

He said: “The effects of wildlife crime can be both damaging and long-lasting. This new role presents a challenge, but by continuing to work with partner agencies and the rural community I’m hopeful that we can turn the tide on wildlife crime in Grampian.”
