Police issue Meadows alert

POLICE have advised residents not to walk through the Meadows alone at night in the wake of two sex attacks.

In an open letter sent to the Edinburgh University Students Association (Eusa), police chiefs also pledged to continue extra patrols in the area. The move follows the rape of a 19-year-old girl in the Meadows on Tuesday, November 15 when she was attacked by two men at 3.30am.

A week later, a 21-year-old woman jogging in the park was sexually assaulted by a man.

In the letter to Eusa, police advised that residents could take “basic crime prevention advice” by avoiding walking alone, sticking to well-lit routes covered by CCTV, carrying a mobile phone and alerting police to anyone’s suspicious behaviour.

A “Reclaim the Night” march was held beside the Meadows following the attacks.
