A statement from PIRC said: “The marked police car was one of several police vehicles responding to an emergency call and it is understood that a number of people witnessed the incident and they may have information that could help the investigation.

“Police Scotland referred the incident to the PIRC because the man sustained an injury following contact with the police.”

The commissioner is to undertake an independent investigation of the incident and submit a report to the procurator fiscal.

Anyone with information is asked to call PIRC on 01698 542 900 or freephone 08081 785 577.
