Hide AdMr Carroll is understood to have been shot five times as he sat in his black Audi S4, while shocked lunchtime shoppers watched.
His killers, believed to be three masked gunmen, then sped off in a black or dark car.
He is said to have links with the criminal underworld and survived an attempt on his life three years ago.
Detective Superintendent Michael Orr said: "It is important that we communicate with members of the public as their support is vital in this type of murder investigation.
"Some people may not wish to speak to the police but prefer to email information.
"I know that there are individuals with criminal connections who will know about this murder. I am clearly keen to hear from anyone who has heard anything about this case and who may be involved.
"There are undoubtedly people out there who can shed light on motive, background and what has happened after the attack."
He said that the content of people's emails would be treated with the "utmost confidence".
