Police down to 3-year low

LOTHIAN and Borders Police have a total of 2912 serving officers, the lowest number since the end of December 2008, new figures have revealed.

The officers were on the force at the end of September compared with the total of 2926 for the previous quarter, a fall of 14.

The numbers on the force had hit 3009 at the end of March last year. The figures were announced as Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill welcomed statistics showing there were 17,265 officers in Scotland at the end of September.
