Police chief on defensive

THE new deputy chief constable of Lothian and Borders Police has hit back at claims that the public is losing confidence in the police.

Figures from the Scottish Policing Performance Framework annual report showed that only 44 per cent of people surveyed across Scotland had confidence in the police's ability to prevent crime, while only 55 per cent had faith in the police being able to catch criminals.

But DCC Steve Allen, who started in his new role with the force earlier this month, said its own survey had found that 72 per cent of people have confidence in the police in Lothian and Borders.

DCC Allen said: "Our own engagement campaign and surveys clearly show that the public within the Lothian and Borders Police force area feel relatively safe and have faith in the service we provide, finding us professional and approachable."
