Police arrest armed robbery gang in Edinburgh

POLICE have arrested a gang of five men who armed with axes attempted to rob a city centre bank in Edinburgh.

The robbers struck at a branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland on Home Street in the Tollcross are of the capital at lunchtime.

It is understood that the gang were apprehended in Howdenhall Road in the south of the city.

Shoppers and local residents looked on as a police cordon was placed around the area as the investigation got underway shortly after 12.30pm.

Police tape stretches across the entrance to the bank and around the corner into Lochrin Place - Thornybauk is also closed.

Detective Inspector Stuart Harkness said: “Police were called to a report of a robbery at RBS in Tollcross, Edinburgh at 12pm today.

“A number of armed men entered the building and demanded cash.

“No one was injured during this incident, however this was a frightening and intimidating experience for the staff and members of public at the branch.”

Meamnwhile an RBS spokesman said: “We can confirm a incident took place at our Tollcross branch in Edinburgh. We are cooperating with the police at this time.”
