Police are appealing for witnesses following a hit and run which killed a swan, leaving a cygnet to be taken in by an animal rescue centre.

The baby swan, taken in by the New Arc animal rescue centre in Auchnagatt, was found near its mother which was run down and killed in Aberdeenshire.

It is believed a grey 4x4 hit the bird at around 1.30pm on Saturday on South Road Bridge, Ellon, failing to stop for the swan - they are a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

Police, who said the driver may not have known that the bird was hit, are appealing for information.
