Police and retailers agree to break cycle of bike thefts

Police and bike retailers in Edinburgh are working together to tackle bicycle thefts in the Capital.

Officers from the search and recovery team have met with all major cycle stores to agree a scheme for customers buying a new bike.

In the past, owners were responsible for registering their bikes. However, many failed to do so.

Following the conference, staff agreed to register newly-bought bikes for the owners and store their personal details in a database.

Police can then use the database to trace the rightful owners of any cycles recovered during an investigation.

A police spokesman said: “The force already has an excellent relationship with the city’s bike retailers, and we are grateful for their assistance in registering bikes on behalf of the owner.

“This will undoubtedly prove useful when stolen cycles are recovered.”
