CELTIC manager Neil Lennon joined former cricketer Sir Ian Botham on the first leg of a charity walk in support of blood cancer research.

Sir Ian, nicknamed “Beefy”, will walk about 160 miles in and around cities across Britain over the next ten days for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

He started in Glasgow yesterday and will stop off at a further nine locations, finishing at Ham House, London, on 21 April.

The walk is the 14th Sir Ian has taken part in for the charity over 27 years and he was inspired to raise money after meeting young patients during his playing career.

He said: “I saw children dying. I was having treatment for a broken foot in Taunton and by the time my treatment was finished by about six weeks, four children I had met in the hospital had died from the disease.

“That was my introduction to it. I’d never heard of it before then and didn’t understand it.

“The money we raised from the very first walk went towards a virus centre here in Glasgow that leads the world in its leukaemia and lymphoma research.”
