Phone pervert targeted mum's friend

A HEAVY breather who offered a mum pornography work during dozens of crank calls has avoided a jail sentence.

Lyle Irvine, 20, called 59-year-old Anne Bain 40 times in the space of five months. During one call he claimed that he worked for Razzle magazine and asked if she wanted to pose in the publication.

Irvine was caught when Mrs Bain contacted BT, who traced the source of the calls to him.

At Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday Irvine was given two years probation after admitting making a series of obscene remarks.

He was also made subject to the notification requirements of the Sexual Offences Act, meaning he will have to tell police where he is living and what job he has.

Fiscal depute Higgins had told the court:

"Between June and November at various times of the day, the accused telephoned the lady. She is well known to him as she is a friend of his mother.

"He made some 40 calls to this lady but when asked to identify himself, he didn't.

"Occasionally he called her by her first name or her surname so it was of course of great concern this unidentified caller seemed to know who she was."

During police interview, Irvine, of Edinburgh's Spring Gardens, claimed he had stopped making the calls three weeks before being caught.

"He said he had no idea why he had started making the telephone calls," Mr Higgins said.
