Sir Sean Connery: Petition launched to rename Edinburgh Airport after the iconic actor

A petition has been launched to renamed Edinburgh Airport after iconic Bond actor Sir Sean Connery.

The petition, which is to Global Infrastructure Partners, says: “Liverpool has John Lennon airport, Belfast has George Best airport and with the death of one of her most famous sons Edinburgh should have a Sir Sean Connery airport.

“Please vote and circulate this petition for maximum coverage."

It has already garnered 2,696 signatures.

Sir Sean Connery died in his sleep on October 31 at his home in The Bahamas after being unwell for some time.

The Edinburgh born actor is most famous for his roles in the James Bond franchise and was the first to play the iconic British spy in the 1962 film Dr No.

He also starred in an Indiana Jones movie, The Man Who Would Be King and won an Oscar for his role in The Untouchables.

This is not the first petition calling for his legacy to be commemorated in his home city, with one suggesting that the Western Approach Road be renamed for him.

There have also been calls for a statue of the man himself to be erected in the Capital.

Tributes for Sir Sean poured in from all over the world after the news broke of his death, including the First Minister who said: “I was heartbroken to learn this morning of the passing of Sir Sean Connery.

"Our nation today mourns one of her best loved sons.”

Sir Sean’s widow has announced that the actor’s ashes could be scattered in Edinburgh according to his last wishes.
