Scottish mum creates incredible homemade McDonald's drive-thru for her children

Sheena Curran said the at home drive-thru took weeks to prepare

The availability of junk food is at a modern low with coronavirus forcing the closure of fast food retailers across the city, but one Edinburgh mum decided to take the matter into her own hands to help make lockdown more exciting for her children.

Sheena Curran spent two weeks painstakingly recreating the exact recipe and experience of a McDonald’s drive-thru for her son and daughter.

Taking inspiration from the YouTube channel Ladbaby’s simulation of a drive-thru restaurant, Ms Curran decided to recreate the experience herself.

Hours of cutting cardboard to create the containers for chicken nuggets and fries, as well as ‘road markings’ and ‘parking bays’ on the floor of their living room, went into the project which Ms Curran said required two weeks of getting up at 7am to prepare in secret.

Her children, Layla, 13, and Cohen, 9, were delighted with the surprise, with Ms Curran not just stopping at the drive-thru experience for full immersion.

As well as that, she spent hours creating the taste of the food she was going to serve up, with the chips soaked in beef fat and frozen and the chicken nuggets given the perfect McDonald’s crispy batter.

Not only could the children order from their ‘car’ but the food was brought straight to their parking spaces, right in front of the sofa.

Posting her creation on Facebook, the 44-year-old mum said “If these wee radges moan about McDonald’s being closed again, I’ll throttle them!”

She told the Evening News: “I do this sort of stuff all the time and the kids kept complaining, so when I saw Ladbaby’s simulation it went from there.

“The kids loved it. The only thing I let them down with was not having the right ice cream for the McFlurrys, all I could do was normal ice cream with a crushed flake.

“It took me about two weeks from start to finish. I was doing most of the work in the morning from 7am when the kids were asleep so I could get out all the card and cut them out but I didn’t have much time to do it each morning before they got up.

“My daughter thought the drive-thru was a bit cringey, but she loved the food. Cohen thoroughly enjoyed it and loved putting in his order and paying.

“If it cheers anyone up during the lockdown that would be great, it’s a bit of good news for a change.”
