Meanwhile, deputy politics editor Gina Davidson is shortlisted for the Nicola Barry award in honour of the award-winning columnist and feature writer, who was known for campaigning journalism during her career.

Sister publication the Evening News is also shortlisted for five awards, including reporter Conor Matchett who is in the running for both Young Journalist of the Year and the coveted Scoop of the Year categories.

Elsa Maishman is up against four other journalists in the Local/Weekly Feature Writer of the Year category, Craig Sinclair is up for Video of the Year and Morven McIntyre is shortlisted in the new category of Podcast of the Year.

The awards, which received a record number of entries this year and are run by the Scottish Newspaper Society, are in their 41st year. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Glasgow in April.

Editor-in-Chief Frank O’Donnell said: “At a time of incredible change in the media industry, these 12 nominations are testament to the hard work and dedication of the team. It’s not just the individuals named, but all of those who support them, edit their copy, help with ideas, drive performance online and make sure copy sings on the page.”

A spokesman for the event said: “The Scottish Press Awards were established by the Scottish Newspaper Society (SNS) 41 years ago.

“They have quickly become the top awards for the newspaper industry, in both print and digital formats, in Scotland and have flourished into a prestigious event in the diary of every journalist. The awards are a wonderful showcase for the best journalistic talent in Scotland.”
