Runaway tortoise found in Blairgowie seeks owner

A TEARAWAY tortoise had been rescued by Scotland’s animal welfare charity after it was discovered in Blairgowrie.

The Scottish SPCA was alerted after a resident of George Street discovered the creature and handed him into a local vets on June 25.

The Hermann’s tortoise is now in the care of the Scottish SPCA’s centre in Hamilton, where he has been named Desmond.

Centre manager Peter Fleming said: “This is the time of year when tortoises are breeding and it’s likely Desmond has gone in search of a mate.

“Perhaps his owner let him out into the garden to enjoy the warm weather and he has managed to escape.

“It’s not unusual for tortoises to dig under their outdoor runs or squeeze through a small gap in a fence.

“We’re hoping we can reunite Desmond with his owner but if no-one comes forward we’ll find him a loving new home.”
