Several of the rabbits in their care are also pregnant, with their babies only adding to the demand for food. All nine of the Scottish SPCA rescue and re-homing centres are still closed to the public, although virtual re-homing is now available via the Scottish SPCA website.

The organisation is issuing an appeal for animal lovers to donate hay and other items to their Lanarkshire centre to try and help meet the demand and ensure they can continue offering a high standard of care to the animals in the centre.

Centre Manager, Gillian Boyle said: “We’re currently caring for 52 rabbits, so we are going through our hay supplies much faster than usual.

“This includes mums with litters of babies, so it can be a struggle to keep up with so many hungry mouths to feed.”

Ms Boyle has appealed for anyone that can help to purchase items via their Amazon wish list, eliminating any location restrictions.

She added: “Items purchased through Amazon can be sent directly to our centre, but they can also be bought elsewhere and dropped off to us.

“We understand that times are difficult just now but if anyone can help us care for these bunnies, we would be so thankful for anything that people can spare.”
